Tomorrow we celebrate another holiday in Sevilla which gives us a day off. It is only a local holiday that is celebrated only in Sevilla on 30th of May.
Sevilla celebrates on Tuesday May 30, 2017 the day of San Fernando, patron of the city. The religious rites are officiated in the interior of the Cathedral of Seville, place where rest the rest of the king San Fernando. After the choral mass in the morning in honor of the patron saint of the city, the traditional procession and military parade take place. At noon, people honor the body. In the afternoon, the religious acts continue with the octave of the Corpus and the dance of six.
In the morning, and for a few hours, the silver urn with the incorrupt body of the Saint remains open to the public.
San Fernardo was son of the King Alfonso IX. He protected the religious communities and worked with soldiers. San Fernando, patron of the city, conquered Seville on November 23, 1248 after two years of siege.
He established the Royal Court in the Royal Alcazares until his death in 1252, at the age of 51 years. His body, uncorrupted, is located at the foot of Ntra. Mrs. the Virgen de los Reyes, patron saint of Seville, in the Royal Chapel of the Cathedral, inside an urn of gilded silver, made by Juan Laureano Da Pina between 1690 and 1719.
In the Plaza Nueva is located the equestrian monument of San Fernando surrounded by the figure of King Alfonso X, Bishop Don Remondo, Admiral Ramón Bonifaz and Garci Perez de Vargas.
Little tip: Most of the shops will be closed during the holiday in Sevilla 😉 Did you know about this holiday before?
